Using Calamine Lotion to Treat Acne and Heal Pimples

Calamine lotion is a well-known treatment for things like poison oak or poison ivy.  Some people even use it for chicken pox or other irritating skin conditions.  Few people know that calamine lotion can actually be used to treat acne breakouts.  As an acne sufferer myself, I've experimented with calamine lotion on several occasions.  I can honestly say that it does help, especially if you're experiencing pustules (puss-filled pimples).  It makes sense if you take into consideration the effects that calamine lotion has on the skin.  It acts as a drying agent on the skin, which helps draw out the puss and oils associated with acne breakouts.  Calamine lotion also helps soothe irritated skin.  If you suffer from extremely dry skin, calamine lotion may not be the best option for you, so keep that in mind as well.

Calamine lotion can be applied nightly after cleansing and toning.  Apply a thin coating to any affected areas. Leave it on overnight and wash off in the morning.  You should see results within a week or so.

If you're interested in trying calamine lotion but you want to go the most natural route, here is are some excellent recipes for homemade calamine lotion that you can make at home:

  • 1/4 cup zinc oxide
    1/2 teaspoon iron oxide
    4 teaspoons bentonite clay
    4 teaspoons baking soda
    1/4 cup water
    1/2 teaspoon glycerin
  • 1/4 cup zinc oxide
    4 teaspoons pink Kaolin clay
4 teaspoons baking soda or 2 teaspoons calcium hydroxide
    1/4 cup water
To make the lotion simply mix all ingredients together in a bowl and store in a jar or other airtight container.

Using Tea Tree Oil to Treat Acne

Tea tree oil is a powerful essential oil derived from the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia plant. Many household products contain tea tree oil, such as toothpaste, lotions, shampoos, and so on. Studies have shown that tea tree oil is indeed effective in treating acne naturally.  Tea tree oil contains something called terpinen-4-ol, which is responsible for it's powerful antibacterial properties. Tea tree oil can be used as a toner, added to lotions or cleansers, or used as a spot treatment on it's own.  Many natural acne products that you find in stores will have tea tree oil as a main ingredient.  However, rather than spending money on pricey products, consider investing in a bottle of tea tree oil and creating your own acne treatments.

Tea Tree Oil Toner: To make an all natural tea tree oil toner, just mix about 10 drops of tea tree oil with 1/2 cup of distilled water.  Store the toner in a glass bottle and apply using a cotton round or cotton ball.  If the toner is too strong you can decrease it to 5 drops of tea tree oil per 1/2 cup of water.

Adding tea tree oil to lotions and cleansers: If you have a favorite lotion or cleanser but you're looking for something more effective in treating and preventing acne, simply add a few drops (2-3 should be plenty) to a bottle of your favorite moisturizer or cleanser.  Be sure to avoid the eye area when applying the product as it can irritate eyes.

Tea Tree Oil for Spot Treatment:  Using tea tree oil as a spot treatment can be extremely effective in treating problem areas.  Since tea tree oil is very strong, you are going to want to dilute it with a bit of water.  Mix 1 tablespoon of distilled water with 1-2 drops of tea tree oil and apply it to your pimple using a clean Q-tip.  Leave it on your face overnight and you should see an improvement by the morning.  The pimple may not be completely gone, but you should notice a decrease in size and severity of the pimple.

Always opt for organic tea tree oil whenever possible.  Since tea tree oil is so highly concentrated, a small bottle should last you quite some time.  Typically it comes in a dropper bottle, but you may find it in diluted forms as well.

10 Natural Homemade Acne Face Mask Recipes that WORK!

Face masks can be costly in many stores.  They may also contain harsh ingredients that can leave your skin feeling dry or irritated after use.  Rather than spend your money on store bough face masks to help alleviate your acne, try some of these great at home acne face mask recipes that you can put together with just a few ingredients that you probably already have in your fridge or cupboard!

Green Tea Face Mask for Acne
Green Tea and Honey Mask: To make this face mask you will need a green tea bag that has been steeped for several minutes in hot water as well as a tablespoon of organic natural honey (preferably Manuka honey).  Cut open the tea bag once it's cooled down and use a small bowl or cup to empty out the tea leaves into. Add in 1 tablespoon of the honey and mix together.  Apply to the face using clean fingers or a clean unused makeup brush.  The honey will help the tea leaves stick to your skin, but be careful because this make can get a little messy.  Leave on for 30 minutes to 1 hour and then rinse off with warm water.  Both Green tea and honey have excellent antibacterial qualities and they help purify the pores.  (This is my personal favorite acne face mask!) *You can also use matcha green tea powder for this mask, which makes the process much easier!

Cinnamon Face Mask
Cinnamon and Honey Mask: Both cinnamon and honey have strong antibacterial properties, making them a good combination for acne treatment.  To make this mask you need 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of honey.  Mix the honey and cinnamon together then apply all over the face. Leave on for 20-30 mins.

Yogurt Face Mask for Acne
Yogurt Face Mask: This is an super simple face mask.  All you need is a few tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt. (You can use regular yogurt instead of Greek, but since Greek yogurt is thicker it is easier to apply and makes a better mask).  Apply a layer of the yogurt all over your face and leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.  The lactic acid in the yogurt provides a deep cleansing affect on the skin and it also helps make the skin feel supple and moisturized.  I've noticed that this mask also helps calm down my acne breakouts and redness.

Banana and Honey Face Mask: If you have any really ripe bananas they will be perfect for this face mask.  You just need 1 ripe banana and 1 tablespoon of natural honey.  Mash up the banana in a small bowl until there are no more chunks. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey into the mashed banana. Apply the banana and honey mask to your face and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing. The potassium in bananas helps speed up the healing process for existing acne. Bananas are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants to help purify and revive skin cells. Combined with the honey this makes an excellent acne face mask.

Strawberry Mask for Acne
Strawberry and Yogurt Face Mask: Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid which is found in many over the counter acne products that you find in stores.  This mask addresses the acne causing bacteria and it also helps sooth the skin.  To make this mask you'll need 1/4 cup of fresh strawberries (organic if possible) and 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt. Blend the strawberries in a blender until they are broken down enough to apply easily to the face.  Combine the blended strawberries with the Greek yogurt and mix together well.  Apply mixture to your face and leave on for 15-20 minutes.

Aspirin and Honey Mask: This mask works great to help dry up pimples if you're looking for something to help heal acne sores quickly.  The aspirin has salicylic acid which is known to help target acne causing bacteria. The honey has antibacterial properties as well, so this mask is extra powerful in addressing the bacteria that causes acne. You'll need about 10 aspirin tablets and 2 tablespoons of honey.  You need to crush the aspirin tablets into a powder.  This can be done by putting them into a sealed Ziploc bag and crushing them with a rolling pin. Once you've crushed the aspirin mix the powder with the honey and then apply to the face with a clean (unused) makeup brush. Leave on 15 minutes then rinse.

Egg White and Yogurt Mask: For this mask all you need is 2 egg whites and 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt.  Eggs are high in vitamins B2, B3, and zinc, which help reduce inflammation and redness that is associated with acne.  Mix the egg whites and yogurt together well and then apply to the face with a clean makeup brush.  Leave on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

Avocado Face Mask: Avocado helps purify the pores in the skin to provide a deep cleansing affect which gets rid of built up oil and dirt in the pores.  All you need for this mask is 1/2 an avocado.  Remove the pulp of the avocado into a small bowl.  Mash up the avocado until there are no chunks and it is a smooth paste.  Apply a layer to the face and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Tomato and Yogurt Face Mask:Tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, which is important in skin health. This mask is great for acne scars and hyperpigmentation because the vitamin A in the tomatoes helps speed up skin cell turnover and reduces the appearance of scars.  To make this mask you will need 1 medium tomato (organic if possible) and 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt.  Cut the tomato into chunks and blend in the blender until it becomes a smooth pulp.  Mix the tomato pulp with the yogurt and apply all over the face.  Leave on for 10-15 minutes then rinse.

Baking Soda Face Mask: This mask helps clear out the gunk built up in your pores.  It is especially good for people with a lot of blackheads.  To make this mask just mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1-2 tablespoons of water.  You might need to add more or less water until you get a thick paste like consistency.
Apply the mask all over your face and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Using Basil to Treat Acne Breakouts and Pimples

Basil for Acne
This is one of the newer home remedies in acne treatment and prevention.  Basil has long been used in cooking, but few know about it's powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Since acne is primarily caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, any remedy that contains antibacterial properties should be helpful; however, basil has extremely powerful antibacterial properties in comparison to other home remedies. In fact, it has been shown to stop the growth of some bacterias that have become resistant to antibiotics (such as staph infections).  Due to it's strong antibacterial properties, it is a very effective method of treating and preventing acne breakouts. It's anti-inflammatory properties help keep down swelling of pimples, especially cystic acne. The antioxidants provide excellent benefits for overall skin health.  Basil really is an all around great natural remedy for acne.

Does using basil for acne actually work? The International Journal of Cosmetic Science has conducted a study on the effectiveness of basil for acne and pimples.  The study concluded that the antibacterial properties of basil are very effective in eliminating acne causing bacteria.

There are various ways that you can use basil to treat your acne.  You can simply purchase fresh basil (organic, if possible) and use those to make your own basil toner or you can purchase an all natural basil essential oil.  If you're interested in using basil for acne, here's a few easy home remedies using basil:

  • Boil 6-10 basil leaves in 1 cup of water for about 5 minutes.  Allow it to cool completely and then strain out the basil leaves. Apply the basil liquid with a cotton ball all over your face as you would with any other toner. This basil and water mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for 1 week. (To make this method more effective, pack the basil leaves into a small bowl and use the round end of spoon to mash up the leaves until they are bruised.  This will help them release more of the oils while boiling.)
  • Boil 2-4 teaspoons of dried basil in 1 cup of water for 8-10 minutes. Strain out the basil particles and store in a glass container in the refrigerator, use as you would any other toner. The mixture will keep in the fridge for 1 week.
  • Use basil essential oil to make your own toner.  Mix 8-10 drops of basil oil into 1/4 cup of water.  Use this mixture as a toner, store in fridge for about 1 week.

Is Candida Causing Your Acne?

Candida is a form of yeast that is found in the body. Yeast can become an issue when there is an imbalance between the “good” and “bad” bacteria within the body.  Everyone has both good and bad bacteria in their body.  When the bad bacteria overpower the good bacteria i  When Candida becomes out of control in your body it can weaken your immune system, affect the body’s ability to eliminate toxins, and affect proper digestive functioning.  So, how is this related to acne?  Well, Candida basically feeds off of sugars in the body.  It then converts the sugars into toxins which can lead to acne breakouts and  an overgrowth of bad bacteria throughout the entire body (including the skin!)

Many acne sufferers have been put on an antibiotic at some point to help control their acne.  Well, this may seem to work at first, but it can actually cause more problems down the road.  While the antibiotic does kill off the bad acne causing bacteria, it also kills off all of the good bacteria that helps keep the bad bacteria (i.e. Candida) in check.

In order to get rid of Candida yeast overgrowth and return the body to a natural healthy balance it is imperative to cleanse the body of yeast overgrowth.  Aside from eliminating foods high in sugar from your diet, you can also increase your intake of certain beneficial supplements.  One product that I recommend for cleansing yeast from the body is ProbiCell.  ProbiCell is an advanced probiotic supplement that helps eliminate the body of yeast overgrowth.  It also helps prevent the adverse effects of candida detox and increases the amount of “good” bacteria within the body to help combat and balance out the “bad” bacteria. Essentially, ProbiCell is a combination of probiotics, prebiotics, and special enzymes that help rid of the body of acne causing Candida overgrowth.  If you think that Candida (yeast) is causing your acne, give it a try.  It’s a natural way to help balance out your body’s natural defenses against potential acne causing bad bacteria.
